Diplomacy is catching on

From Ulm to Brussels – Insights into Germany’s foreign policy

How does foreign policy work? What role does Germany play in Europe and the world? And what does a diplomat’s job actually involve? Answers to these questions will be provided by the event „Diplomacy in Schools“, hosted by the Europe Direct Centre at the Danube Office in Ulm/Neu-Ulm in collaboration with the Federal Foreign Office, the City of Ulm’s Coordination Office for Citizen Dialogue and Open Government, and Ulm Adult Education Centre. This nationwide programme run by the Federal Foreign Office brings political education directly into the school curriculum and enables pupils from Year 10 onwards to engage in a personal exchange with a diplomat on current international politics and Germany’s role in Europe and the world.

Visiting Ulm is Christian Küsters, who has been working for the Federal Foreign Office since 2019. He is currently working on sanctions policy, with a particular focus on Russia and Iran. Prior to this, he spent four years at the German Representative Office in the Palestinian Territories in Ramallah. His previous roles include working as a policy adviser and at the European Commission in Brussels.

Between Berlin, Ulm and Brussels: By offering insights into German foreign policy in Europe and around the world, this event provides a practical and interactive complement to lessons – for example, in social studies – and to careers guidance from Year 10 onwards. The focus is on the pupils’ questions and perspectives.
