Danube Swabian memories of forced labour in the Soviet Union

Cabinet exhibition to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the Danube Swabians after the Second World War

Duration in Ulm: 17.01.2025 - 21.4.2025

Opening: Thursday, 16 January, 7 pm

From 1945 to 1949, around 90,000 Danube Swabians were drafted into the labour service. As part of German reparations, they were expected to contribute to the reconstruction of the Soviet Union after the Second World War. To this end, they were deported from their homes in Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia in the winter of 1944/45. They lived and worked in camps in the Donets Basin and the Urals under the most unfavourable conditions.

What do the deportees experience during this time? How do those left behind fare? What comes afterwards?

To mark the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the Danube Swabians, the DZM is dedicating a cabinet exhibition to this topic. The small exhibition approaches the events through selected life stories.
