Its importance for the EU
On 5 November 2024, the presidential and congressional elections will take place in the USA. The election campaign is characterised by a constant stream of unpredictable events: The assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the withdrawal of Joe Biden and the nomination of Kamala Harris as the Democratic frontrunner. But one question remains: Will Donald Trump return to the White House? In addition to the office of US President, all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the senators in the Senate will be newly elected at the same time.
The elections on 5 November will point the way forward, not only for the USA, but also for relations between the USA and the EU. The future of NATO and Western security policy is at stake. To what extent will the role of the USA and the role of Europe (and Germany) in the world be influenced by the outcome of this election? What can we expect in terms of the direction of transatlantic economic policy and climate protection? Last but not least, it is also about the culture of democratic debate: How reliable do "facts" have to be? How do we argue about the big questions of our time?
Discuss the consequences of the election result for the EU:
- Elmar Teveßen (Head of the ZDF studio in Washington)
- Dr Cornelius Adebahr (Speaker Team EUROPE DIRECT of the EU Representation in Germany)
- NN (Atlantic Academy Rhineland-Palatinate e.V.)
The event is being held in cooperation between the Fridtjof Nansen Academy for Political Education and the EUROPE DIRECT centres in Ingelheim, Kaiserslautern, Ostalb, Saarbrücken and Ulm.
