Europe in conversation with Michal Hvorecký

Democracy, freedom and social cohesion are facing major challenges in Europe today. In many countries, the principles of the rule of law, independent media and civic engagement are coming under increasing pressure. At the same time, many people are demonstrating great personal commitment to democratic values and an open Europe.

Against this backdrop, we are delighted to invite you to a special evening of conversation with the Slovak author and journalist Michal Hvorecký and the journalist and expert on Eastern Europe Stephan Ozsváth on.

The evening takes its starting point from Hvorecký’s book „Dissident“. In it, the author combines personal experiences with a compelling examination of current political developments. The book is intended as a passionate plea for democracy, for Europe and for the importance of an active civil society.

The discussion will cover, amongst other things, the following questions:

  • Why do we need new „dissidents“ today?
  • How resilient are democratic societies?
  • What role do independent media and a strong civil society play?
  • What can citizens themselves do to promote democracy and social cohesion?
  • What shared values unite Europe?

Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of the Danube region and his many years’ experience as a journalist, Stephan Ozsváth will discuss the book’s literary, political and social perspectives with the author and place them within a broader European context.

Following the discussion, the audience is invited to ask their own questions and join in the debate. The event is expressly not intended as a party-political forum, but rather as an open exchange on the future of democratic societies in Europe.

Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It thrives on the commitment of its citizens. An evening for everyone with an interest in Europe, democracy and social cohesion.
